DISCO warns against vandalism of power infrastructure in Kano

The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has warned customers in its franchise area against illegal connection and vandalism of critical power infrastructure.

Ibrahim Shawai, Head of Corporate Communication of the company, gave the warning in a statement issued in Kano on Monday.

KEDCO’s franchise area include Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa States.

Shawai expressed concern over rampant cases of illegal connections, meter-by-pass, transformer oil theft, and other forms of vandalism, describing the trend as a threat to the company and safety of the people.

He said: “As a responsible organisation; we do not cede our tasks to any customer, it is our job to repair faults on our installations, hence members of the public should not fix any faults.

“This is part of our safety priority to protect our customers and their properties from any danger arising from illegal connection and other forms of sabotage. We have trained engineers to attend to such matters.”

Shawai added that KEDCO’s Special Investigation and Prosecution Task Force on Electricity Offenders (SIPTEO) had embarked on surveillance in the area to deal with vandals and other electricity offenders.

He appealed to the people to be vigilant and to report suspected acts of vandalism within its franchise to security agencies, noting that such actions would assist the company to serve them better.

Shawai quoted Mr. Jamil Gwamna, the Managing Director, as saying that the company would restrategise and realign its plans to meet demands of customers in line with international standards.
